  4. INTRODUCTION

  6. Ephesians 1:22-23
  7. "And  hath  put all things under his feet,  and gave him to be 
  8. head over all things to the church,  which is his body,  THE 
  9. FULLNESS OF HIM that filleth all in all."
  10.  
  11. God has used many different pictures in his word to give us a
  12. fuller understanding of the depth of unity he desires. "As thou,
  13. Father art in me and I in thee." John 17:21. Unity of the
  14. Godhead.

  16. I.  EXHORTATION TO UNITY    (Eph.4:1)
  17.  
  18.      The most significant truth about the church is that it is a  
  19.      unity, "There is one body" Eph.4:4."Now are ye one body in   
  20.      Christ" 1 Cor. 12:27  Jesus prayed,  "That they all may be    
  21.      one, as thou, Father art in me and I in thee, that they may  
  22.      also be one with us. That the world may believe that thou    
  23.      hast  sent me."  John 17:24
  24.      Paul exhorts us to walk in unity. Eph. 1:1,"Walk worthy of    
  25.      the vocation wherewith ye are called."

  27. II.  ESSENTIALS (CHARACTER REQUIREMENTS) TO WALK IN UNITY  
  28.      (Eph.1:2)
  29.  
  30.      A. Lowliness = Humility
  31.         A thankful sense of dependence upon God. The opposite of 
  32.         pride and conceit. Humility looks upward, pride looks     
  33.         self-ward (inward).
  34.  
  35.      B. Meekness = Gentleness and Kindness (submissive)
  36.         An  unresisting,  uncomplaining  disposition which        
  37.         enables us to bear without irritation or resentment
  38.         the taunts and injuries from others.
  39.  
  40.      C. Longsuffering = Enduring (enduring patiently)
  41.         An enduring,  un-wear-out-able spirit which knows how to
  42.         outlast  pain or provocation.  Opposite to short temper,
  43.         short fuse.
  44.  
  45.      D. Forbearing  = Patience (patiently enduring)
  46.         A patient spirit which goes on loving in spite of their
  47.         faults and weaknesses.

  49. III.  EVALUATION OF UNITY.       (Eph. 4:4-6)

  51.       Endeavouring to keep the unity of the spirit"  Eph. 4:3
  52.       NOTE.  Endeavoring = "SPUDAZO" = Make earnest effort
  53.            Derived from  = "SPUDE"   = Speed 
  54.  
  55.       A. We need to recognise that unity of the spirit already    
  56.          exists in the body of Christ. (It is only possible to    
  57.          keep something that already exists.)
  58.  
  59.       B. How do we keep the unity of the spirit?
  60.          By walking worthy.  Eph. 4:1-2
  61.  
  62.       C. What is the unity of the spirit?
  63.          1. Paul  lists  seven things which are the churches 
  64.             essence  of oneness in the spirit.
  65.          2. First of all there is:  one body, one spirit, 
  66.             one hope,- the body is vitalized by one spirit
  67.             and moves progressively toward one hope.
  68.          3. Secondly:  loyalty  to one Lord gives birth to
  69.             one faith which is signalized by obedience in
  70.             one baptism.
  71.          4. Last:  of all one God and Father of all.  Every
  72.             unity exists and is sustained by him.

  74.       D. The Giver and the Gift. Eph. 4:7-10. Unity through Gifts
  75.           Christ the example of ministry shows the rewards of
  76.           humility.

  79. IV. EQUIPPING FOR UNITY. (PROVISION FOR PERFECTION)              
  80. (Eph.4:11-13)

  82.      1.   Means    - 5 Ministries  (Each ministry is "according to
  83.           the measure of Christ" within that minister.)
  84.  
  85.      2.   Evidence - Maturity
  86.                    - Edification
  87.           Into the "unity of the faith" through understanding
  88.           Christ.

  90.              1. Means of Maturity = "Unity of faith"
  91.              Relationship brings harmony and single vision.
  92.              Isa. 52:8

  94.              2. Level of Maturity = "Perfect Man"
  95.              Maturity both individually and collectively.

  97.              3. Measure of Maturity = "Stature of the Fullness of 
  98.              Christ"
  99.              The capacity to represent Christ in every person and 
  100.              ministry completely.

  103. V. EXPLANATION OR REASON FOR UNITY: (PROTECTION FROM DECEPTION)
  104.    The Alternative - Eph. 4:14

  106.              1. Spiritual Retardation.  "Be no more children"
  107.                 (infant)
  108.              2. Instability.  "Tossed to and fro and carried 
  109.                 about"
  110.              3. Prey for deceivers.  "Slight of men, cunning
  111.                 craftiness"

  114. VI. EXPANSION THROUGH UNITY (PROGRESSION BY RECEPTION) Eph. 4:16

  116.           Unity in all by all, functioning in unity.
  117.           The whole body -
  118.           a. Fitted Together      =  Fitly joined together.
  119.           b. Fastened together    =  Compacted... every joint    
  120.              (broken bones knit)     supplieth.
  121.                                   =  Interpersonal Relationships 
  122.           c. Functioning Together =  Effectual working of every  
  123.                                      part makes increase.
  124.                                   =  A whole body "Every Joint,
  125.                                      Every Part"  Col.2:9
  126.       NOTE:  Ezek. 37:7-10
  127.           The  regathering of Israel a pattern of reuniting of
  128.           the members  of Christ's body.

  130.           First, NOISY ACTIVITY,  "There was a noise, and behold a
  131.           shaking" Then, a joining, "Bone to his bone"
  132.  
  133.           Finally, FUNCTIONING ACTIVITY, "a mighty army stood upon
  134.           its feet"
  135.  
  136.       BODY - Unity in Life.
  137.              "For as the body is one, and hath many members, 
  138.           and all members of that one body, being many, are one
  139.           body, so also is Christ"  1 Cor. 12:12-22
  140.           Each member of the body is necessary, and each has its 
  141.           own function, yet all are at liberty to function in its
  142.           own  unique  way.
  143.           NOTE:   Liberty, NOT Independence. The body is
  144.           IN/TER/DEPENDENT. Members functioning in life, bringing
  145.           unity into life.

  147.       ARMY - Unity in Vision and Purpose.
  148.              "And the breath came into them, and they lived, and
  149.           stood up upon their feet, an exceeding great army"
  150.           Ezek. 37:10.
  151.              An army is never aimless, but is disciplined, 
  152.           prepared and has unity of vision and purpose.

  154. VI. ENCOURAGEMENT AND WALK   Eph. 4:17-32

  156.      1. Walk in the new man. Note. v.24. not as the World.
  157.           A. The walk of the Old Man. v.17-19
  158.                Corrupt according to deceitful lusts. v.22.
  159.           B. The walk of the New Man. v.20-32
  160.                Created in righteousness and holiness. v.24.
  161.           Putting off the Old Man - putting on the New Man
  162.           Head is Christ, taught by Him, learned Christ. v.20-21
